Pentagonal Penrose Tile Set Reclaimed Wood Laser Engraved and Cut Wall Art or Crystal Grid
This wall art or crystal grid is based on the Penrose Tile Set. In 1973 Roger Penrose, a mathematician, found a set of six tiles that force aperiodicity, or non repetitive tiling. Later, in 1974, he was able to reduce the set to two tiles. The shape of a pair of Penrose tiles can vary but the most common are the kite and the dart. These tiles are derived from a rhombus with angles 72 and 108 degrees. The Penrose Tiling Set solves the issue of how to tile pentagonal shapes on a plane. Normally when pentagons are tiled, an additional 18 degrees is needed to complete the tiling which is not available due to the shapes of the angles found in the pentagon. This particular Penrose Tiling Set is based on a pentagram, or five pointed star, shape.
This beautiful 5" (13 cm) art piece has been laser engraved and cut from beautifully-grained reclaimed 1/4" interior-grade plywood. It is unfinished - perfect for sealing, painting, or staining however you want. There may be some scorch marks remaining from the laser cutting process - this is normal as this manufacturing technique uses a high-powered light to burn through the wood.
