Evernia prunastri, also known as oakmoss, is a species of lichen. It can be found in many mountainous temperate forests throughout the Northern Hemisphere, and is common here in coastal Northern California. Oakmoss grows primarily on the trunk and branches of oak trees, but can also be found on the bark of other tree. Oakmoss is bushy, and grows together on bark to form large clumps. They are light greenish-white to dark olive green and highly branched, resembling the form of antlers.
Coast Live Oak (Quercus agrifolia) is an evergreen oak native in Coastal California from Mendocino County south to Northern Baja California, Mexico. Mature specimens can live up to 250+ years, reaching a height of 30-82 ft. The mature trunk is contorted, massive, and gnarled, lending a unique appearance to the tree, a symbol of the California Coast.
